Seattle and the East Side are home to a new arts magazine. Published by Encore, the same company that prepared the vast majority of event programs up and down Puget Sound, City Arts Magazine purports to be a magazine that will:
“[E]xplore, both broadly and in depth, the idea of creativity in our community. Who’s making art and making a difference in Seattle, where culture, at the moment, is an invigorating blend of art, design, film, music, dance, theatre, fashion and so much more.”
Even with two major daily newspapers, two independent weeklies, and numerous neighborhood newspapers, arts coverage could be better. A specialty magazine like City Arts will expand coverage and allow writers and readers to go beyond the who, what, where and when of most news stories.
Tacoma was the first city to have City Arts showing up around town. The inaugural Seattle issue is on news stands now, but seemed to be bereft of any significant music coverage. Hopefully, the editors will work to add more music coverage to their pages.
